When? In the beginning

John 1--1-2

Revised and re-posted is the Verse of the Day for December 1, 2017: a familiar passage taken from John 1:1-2, 14 in the King James Version:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Here is a scripture memory song based on John 1:1-2:

The widely recognized passage that opens the Gospel of John also brings to mind the opening scripture of the Bible, Genesis 1:1 (KJV):

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

This verse was among the first scripture memory songs that I was inspired to compose more than 15 years ago. I also used gestures to reinforce the message:

The index finger on the right hand was raised followed by the index finger on the left hand being raised to indicate “Genesis: 1:1.” Sweeping gestures were then used to reinforce the words “In the beginning” with hands that came together to represent an open Bible. The index finger on each hand would then be extended heavenward pointing to “God.” With the palms of the hand held outward with circular motions representing “God created,” followed by the index fingers pointing upward again on the words “the heavens.”  With the hands pointing downward in a repeated criss-cross motion to represent “the Earth.” Genesis 1:1 would be repeated with the index fingers being raised on the right hand and the left hand.

Fear of the Lord: Where it begins

Proverbs 9--10

Proverbs 9:10 in the Amplified Bible, the Verse of the Day for October 24, 2017, makes a bold statement regarding the origin of wisdom:

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding.

The word “beginning,” transports us to the first verse in the Bible:

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Proverbs 8:23 in the Amplified Bible brings to our attention that even before the beginning spoken of Genesis 1:2, the wisdom of God was on the scene:

From everlasting I was established and ordained, From the beginning, before the earth existed, [I, godly wisdom, existed].

If wisdom existed before the beginning, what is origin or the beginning of wisdom? Once again, the answer comes from Proverbs, the Book of Wisdom:

Proverbs 4:7 (Amplified Bible)

The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skillful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]! And with all your acquiring, get understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation].

The Psalmist adds to the discussion with these enlightening words:

The [reverent] fear of the Lord is the beginning (the prerequisite, the absolute essential, the alphabet) of wisdom; A good understanding and a teachable heart are possessed by all those who do the will of the Lord; His praise endures forever.

The message regarding the origin of wisdom expressed in the Verse of the Day is reinforced and augmented in Proverbs 1:7[Amplified Bible]:

The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; But arrogant fools despise [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction and self-discipline.

In order to comprehend more fully the essence of wisdom, we must go back to the beginning.

As we reflect upon wisdom, so brilliantly displayed in the Book of Proverbs and elsewhere, we find that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” poetically expressed in this manner:

The Beginning of Wisdom

The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Psalm 19:9 (AMP)

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding.

Proverbs 9:10 (AMP)

We begin and stand in absolute awe of You,

Thoroughly washed in the fountain of holiness.

The old has passed away—Behold, You make all things new:

Redeemed and justified by Christ, our righteousness.

As you search the earth, may we find grace in your sight.

We seek to be wise but never in our own eyes.

We stand perfected offspring destined to walk upright,

Beloved ones, whose heart Your Word purifies.

We are filled with knowledge and wisdom from above

And bound by a covenant no one can sever,

For nothing can separate us from God’s love:

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever.

We are renewed in strength and upheld by God’s Word,

As we pursue wisdom, growing in the fear of the Lord.

As we attempt to apprehend to at greater degree the magnitude of God and His infinite power and glory, we speak of the fear of the Lord. We stand in absolute awe, in wonder, and amazement. Recognizing both an awareness of terror and dread, we tremble in light of our coming up short and perpetually missing the mark. At the same time we are aware of the reverence, respect, and honor that God Almighty rightfully deserves, knowing that He loves us, and His unconditional love casts out all fear.

We rejoice with the Psalmist who declares:

Let those who fear the LORD say: “His love endures forever” (Psalm 118:4).

The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love (Psalm 147:11).

john-1-1-2

Revised and re-posted, the Verse of the Day for December 1, 2016 takes us all the way back to the beginning:

John 1:1-2, 14 (NKJV):

[The Eternal Word] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

[ The Word Becomes Flesh ] And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Proverbs 9--10

Revised and re-posted, the following entry examines the Verse of the Day for October 24, 2016, which makes a bold statement regarding the origin of wisdom found in Proverbs 9:10 graphically illustrated in this dramatic way:

Proverbs 9:10 (NLT):

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

The Amplified Bible offers this:

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding.

When we hear the word “beginning,” we recall the first verse of the Bible that transports us to the place where life began:

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Proverbs 8:23 in the Amplified Bible brings to our attention that even before the beginning spoken of Genesis 1:1, the wisdom of God was on the scene:

Proverbs 4:7 (AMP)

The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skillful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]! And with all your acquiring, get understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation].

The Psalmist adds to the discussion with these enlightening words:

Psalm 111:10 (AMP)

The [reverent] fear of the Lord is the beginning (the prerequisite, the absolute essential, the alphabet) of wisdom; A good understanding and a teachable heart are possessed by all those who do the will of the Lord; His praise endures forever.

The message regarding the origin of wisdom expressed in the Verse of the Day is reinforced and augmented in Proverbs 1:7 (AMP):

The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; But arrogant fools despise [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction and self-discipline.

Thus, we see that in order to comprehend more fully the essence of wisdom, we must go back to the beginning.

As we reflect upon wisdom, so brilliantly displayed in the Book of Proverbs and elsewhere, we find that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” poetically expressed in this manner:

The Beginning of Wisdom

In the beginning: Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1

The heavens are telling: Signs and wonders still

Psalm 19-1

The Verse of the Day for June 12, 2014 comes from Psalm 19:1-2

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

This verse brings to mind the fact that the Hubble Space Telescope has observed tens of thousands of targets and has collected more than half a million pictures in its archive. Since its launching in 1990, this remarkable scientific device has taken countless pictures of planets, stars and galaxies. Hubble has seen the birth and death of stars in the midst of galaxies that are billions of light years away. These amazing photographs provide a glorious display of the handiwork of God, as the Psalmist declares in Psalm 19.

Interstellar gas and dust form nebulae, such as these butterfly nebulae, another awesome display of God's handiwork.

Interstellar gas and dust form nebulae, such as these butterfly nebulae, another awesome display of God’s handiwork.

The first chapter of Genesis opens with the bold declaration: “In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Verse 16 goes on to relate other aspects of God’s creation by stating:

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

Not only did God fashion the sun and the moon, but almost as if an aside, “He made the stars also . . . in their seemingly endless hosts of galaxies, but the Psalmist also reminds us “He tells the number of the stars; he calls them all by their names.” (Psalm 147:4)

By means of technological advancements, such as the Hubble Telescope, we are able to observe the heavens as never before, making the Word of God more alive than we could have imagined. We are now able to see the glorious handiwork of God on breath-taking  display. The opening verses of Psalm 19 also bring to mind the awesome creative power of God, poetically expressed in this way:

Signs and Wonders Still

The heavens declare the glory of God;

And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Day unto day utters speech,

reveals knowledge.

Psalm 19:1-2

Signs and wonders still abound in the nighttime sky;

Principalities and powers assault and strive.

Mars looms large as a full moon to the naked eye:

A bold prelude before the daystar shall arrive—

This rising symbol of the red planet of war.

The heavens declare the wonders of God’s glory;

Maker of sun and moon, calling by name each star,

Unfolds a tapestry for those with eyes to see.

The mystery of His will is now clearly revealed,

For we have an even more sure prophetic word.

On display by night and day, no longer concealed,

Such signs and wonders confirm the Word of the Lord.

Behold! The beloved bridegroom stands at the door:

Our redemption is nearer than ever before.

Karen Clark Sheard offers a variation on the theme from Psalm 19:1-2 with her rendition of “The Heavens are telling.”
