A prayer for the nation for God’s protection

As America celebrates its independence, the Verse of Day for July 3, 2017 offers this reminder:

Proverbs 14:34 (Message Bible):

God-devotion makes a country strong; God-avoidance leaves people weak.

The Amplified Bible Classic Edition puts it this way:

Uprightness and right standing with God (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation) elevate a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

Finally, the New Living Testament has this to say:

Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

We begin our day with a time of reflecting and offering this prayer crafted from selected verses from the Bible, asking for God’s divine protection for our nation as a whole:

Almighty God, to whom is due forever and ever all blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might. You are the Lord of Hosts, the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle, our Maker, Defender, the Ancient of Days. We acknowledge that you are our sun and shield, that you will give grace and glory. Our buckler, our fortress, our strong tower, you are our deliverer, who has delivered us in the past and You continue to deliver us each day, as we walk in assurance that you shall ever deliver us from evil. We acknowledge that you are El Shaddai, the Almighty and All-Bountiful Giver, the Lord, our God, the Faithful One who cannot fail.

Though we are encompassed on every side, though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will fear no evil, for you are with us. We will not fear; we will not be dismayed, for you are our God. You are our light and our salvation, and we shall not fear. You are the strength of our lives, we shall not be afraid, for you have said you will never, never, leave us–no never, never, never forsake us; therefore, we boldly proclaim that you are the Lord, our God, who will never let us be put to shame. You will strengthen us; you will help us. You will uphold us with your victorious right hand, and you will come to our aid, as you have promised.

When the enemy comes in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against it, for you are Jehovah-Nissi, the Lord, our banner. We desire to dwell in the secret place of the most high, knowing that we shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty, for you are the Lord, our refuge, our fortress, our God in whom we place our trust. We shall not be afraid of the terror by night nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at our side, and ten thousand at our right hand, but it shall not come near us, for you are our protector and provider. We offer thanks and praise that in the time of trouble, you shall hide us–in your secret place shall you hide us. You have given your angels charge over us, to keep us in all our ways. The Lord of Hosts, the Mighty One, is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge. When we pass through the waters, you will be with us, and they shall not overtake us; though we pass through the fire, it shall not consume us, for you are the Lord, our God, the Holy One, our Savior.

As Jehoshaphat led Judah into battle against overwhelming odds and commanded the priests and singers to go before the armies of God, so we also offer exuberant praise, triumphant exultation, and joyful thanksgiving to you. We thank you that you are the God of our fathers, the God of heaven, and you rule over all kingdoms of the nations, and in your hand is power and might and that no one can stand before you. We praise the God of heaven and earth and declare that the Lord is good, for His mercy endures forever.

You have said that you go before us as our battle axe and our weapons of war; indeed, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. You declare that wisdom is better than weapons of war, and thus we invoke the Spirit of Wisdom and the Spirit of Might in the spiritual battle in which we are engaged. As you lead us into battle, the glory of the Lord shall be our rear guard, as you carry us from victory to victory. We declare that we will not be terrified by our enemies nor be distressed by the challenges that confront us, for the battle is not ours but it is yours, and you shall bear your mighty arm that the nations of the world might know that the Lord, our God, is mighty to save.

We thank and praise you for the victory. Now thanks be unto God who always causes us to triumph in Christ and makes manifest the sweet savor of His knowledge by us in every place.  We declare it is so, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our conquering hero and soon-coming King, the name above all names, we pray. Amen.

Our prayer is that God will continue to bless “America, the Beautiful,” as sung by Ray Charles:
