The heavens are still telling

Psalm 19-1The Verse of the Day for June 12, 2015 comes from Psalm 19:1-2:

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

This verse brings to mind the fact that this year is the 25th anniversary of development of the Hubble Space Telescope. Since its launch in 1990, the telescope remains in orbit and continues to observed tens of thousands targets, collecting more than half a million pictures of planets, stars and galaxies. Hubble has seen the birth and death of countless stars in the midst of galaxies that are billions of light years away. These amazing photographs provide a glorious display of the handiwork of God, as the Psalmist declares in Psalm 19.
The first chapter Genesis opens with the bold declaration: “In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Verse 16 goes on to relate other aspects of God’s creation by stating:

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

Not only did God fashion the sun and the moon, but almost as if an aside, “He made the stars also . . . in their seemingly endless hosts of galaxies, but the Psalmist also reminds us “He tells the number of the stars; he calls them all by their names.” (Psalm 147:4)

By means of technological advancements, such as the Hubble Telescope, we are able to observe the heaven as never before, making the Word of God more alive than ever before. We are now able to see the glorious handiwork of God on glorious display. The opening verses of Psalm 19 also bring to mind the awesome creative power of God poetically expressed in this way:

Signs and Wonders Still

The heavens declare the glory of God;

And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Day unto day utters speech,

And night unto night reveals knowledge.

Psalm 19:1-2

Signs and wonders still abound in the nighttime sky;

Principalities and powers assault and strive.

Mars looms large as a full moon to the naked eye:

A bold prelude before the daystar shall arrive—

This rising symbol of the red planet of war.

The heavens declare the wonders of God’s glory;

Maker of sun and moon, calling by name each star,

Unfolds a tapestry for those with eyes to see.

The mystery of His will is now clearly revealed,

For we have an even more sure prophetic word.

On display by night and day, no longer concealed,

Such signs and wonders confirm the Word of the Lord.

Behold! The beloved bridegroom stands at the door:

Our redemption is nearer than ever before.

Karen Clark Sheard offers a variation on the theme from Psalm 19:1-2 with her rendition of “The Heavens are telling.”
